The timeless uniqueness of a grandfather clock is something that attracts many people who visit your home. The beautiful masterpiece is quietly standing in the corner or against the wall of the living room, watching at those who enter the house.
Where the name comes from
The name comes from a song composed by a certain Henry Clay Work in the year 1876. He composed the song “My Grandfather’s Clock” after his grandfather clock broke down, which was an incident that occurred at the same moment that his 90 year old friend died.
Grandfather/mother/daughter?
The beautiful clocks generally are between 6 to 8 feet tall. Sometimes people call them grandmother clocks because they are between 5 to 6 feet or granddaughter clocks because they are even smaller than that.
Which one to buy?
A floor – or grandfather – or longcase clock, which are all names for the same clock, is rather big. So keep an eye on the space of your room or office: the clock should fit in it. Keep also in mind that the style of your room or office should match. A traditional clock is perfect for antique furniture while a contemporary clock better matches modern furniture. And don’t forget the colors, which actually is the most important aspect! All the best in your hunt for grandfather clocks!
